Rock You Like A Severe Weather Pattern

With Nashville getting hit particularly hard recently by extreme weather, including tornadoes and hail, the metro area has been on edge, but the clever folks at Clear Channel Classic Rock WNRQ (105.9 The Rock)/Nashville, led by PD/night guy Mud, came up with a stellar promo to keep their audience safe and calm -- they're giving away a storm shelter. For reals. "Listeners are signing up on our website to win their very own safe house, decorated Rock-style!" Mud tells RAMP. The idea came out of one of Mud's staff meetings, and station sales and marketing reps got a storm-shelter client on board to supply a 4x6' safe house built with 7-gauge steel walls -- enough to repel anything a tornado can throw at it. The vault-like door features six locking bolts and a biometric or numerical keypad so it can double as a panic room, among other cool features. Not only that, but the station crew got ahold of the shelter and decorated i t with posters, plus put some CDs in there so the winner has something decent to listen to while the storm rages outside.
"The listeners have been going wild over it on social networks and calling the station," Mud tells RAMP. "Everyone needs a safe house, but the cost is so outrageous. This promo is a great opportunity for our audience, and it also targets our profile demo, who is certainly family-oriented." WNRQ has been running some great on-air promos supporting the giveaway featuring weather-related songs like The Doors' "Riders on the Storm"; Bob Dylan's "Shelter from the Storm"; REO Speedwagon's "Ridin' the Storm Out"; and Mud's favorite one, "Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones.
